CONCERT REVIEW: Twenty One Pilots - Night 2 in NYC

I just recently published a review of a Twenty One Pilots show, live from the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. That review was just one of two, as I was back at that same venue the following night. Although tickets were selling for nearly 3 times the face value on stubhub the day of the show, I couldn't resist another evening with this amazing duo.

Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun opened promptly at 8:45 to the familiar starter in 'HeavyDirtySoul.' The entire setlist ended up being identical to the previous evening, which was by no means a bad thing. The Tuesday show was a 4 star performance, and the Wednesday vibe was even better. Plus the band had a great surprise up their sleeve.

After six songs into the set, Joseph acknowledged that this was the bands second night in NYC, and that they had something special in store for the night 2 crowd. He then explained that they've made some friends in New York over the years, and invited a parade of alternative bands to join them on stage. This included Misterwives, Walk the Moon, Halsey, Hoodie Allen, and Matt & Kim.

The super group all sang together for 'We Don't Believe What's on TV.' Misterwives lead singer Mandy Lee even took the lead with singing the second verse. It was an awesome moment to see so many accomplished groups on stage together. Twenty One Pilots toured relentlessly for years, and the connections they've made showed through here.

Another set highlight was the always fun 'Run and Go,' from the Vessel album. This is one of my personal favorites, so I was exceptionally happy to see this on the setlist. It's a favorite for the Pilots to play live and at one point of the song, they ask all the fans to 'Get Up!' on someone else's shoulders. It's just one of the many wild moments in the club like atmosphere of the duo's performance.

'Run and Go' was just one example of the amazing energy put into the second half of the set. Josh once again rode his drum set into the crowd on 'Ride,' and Tyler had fans raising him up above the crowd for 'Holding on to You.' The appropriate closer was 'Car Radio,' where Joseph actually went to a platform towards the back of the room that served as a second stage.

Over the years I've seen a couple different bands on back to back nights. I think on every occasion, night 2 has always been better. This show was no exception. While the performance put on night 1 was great, the sequel seemed to be a bit stronger and the special appearances by other bands put it over the top.

I love these guys and can't wait to see them again! Tampa should be primed and ready for their headlining gig at 97x's Next Big Thing this year. As a current ticket holder for a pit seat, I have an anxious feeling that will be a top 5 show of an already huge year.

December 5th. So pumped!
